Contributions to Control Systems in the summer semester 2023

In order to support the professional exchange in control and automation technology far beyond the borders of our university, some years ago a colloquium series with the name “Contributions to Control Systems” was brought into being at the Institute of Automatic Control. Speakers from industry and research talk about their work in relevant developments and applications in the field of automatic control.

Center for Vertical Mobility - A Competence and Test Center for Vertical Mobility

Dr.-Ing. Tobias Ostermann

Institut und Lehrstuhl für Flugsystemdynamik
RWTH Aachen University
Germany

Abstrakt:

The Center for Vertical Mobility CVM is intended to become a unique nationwide competence and test center for vertical mobility in the former Rhenish Mining Region. Vertical mobility focusses on person-carrying and unmanned aerial vehicles, from medical drones to air taxis, which are capable to take-off vertically and have a high degree of automation. In this context, it is planned to locate the center in the direct vicinity of the existing Aldenhoven Testing Center for automotive applications, where "networked automated mobility" will be jointly researched across all modes of transport and combined in an exemplary holistic concept. The first practical applications are federally funded research programs with technology implementations in real laboratories.

Digitalisation and automation in satellite control and mission operations

Dr. Stephan Recher

Space, Business Development
CGI Deutschland B.V. & Co. KGGermany

Abstrakt:

For many decades, space missions have fascinated not only scientists and engineers, but every person on Earth. The influence of satellite-based data and the information obtained from them on our everyday lives is enormous, and it is impossible to imagine modern society without their use. In addition to the major space-faring nations, more and more countries are sending their own satellites into space.

Rockets, satellites and space stations are controlled via ground segments on Earth. After reception at a large ground station network, the data obtained from various sensors on-board the satellites are processed in mission-specific data centres. The talk gives an overview of the advancing digitalisation and automation in the ground segment of space missions up to the area of satellite data utilisation.

Mitigating Uncertainty and Lack of Data in Poorly Identifiable Systems. Case study: Depth of Anesthesia Control

Prof. dr. ir. Clara M. Ionescu

Department of Electromechanical, Systems and Metal Engineering
Ghent University
9052 Ghent
Belgium

Abstrakt:

There are increasing trends in modern medicine to integrate the use of computer assisted decision making systems. The talk is addressing the specific problem of optimal drug dosing in multiple-drug schemes for regulation of depth of anesthesia. The process, aka the patient’s dynamic response, is multivariable, strongly interacting effects among drug combinations. These interactions with lack of excitatory freedom in identification signals make it very challenging to achieve output optimality in terms of depth of anesthesia and hemodynamic stability. Surgical intervention is here an unmodelled disturbance. A focus of the presentation is to address the various sources of uncertainty, in example lack of system and disturbance models, thereby affecting the accuracy of prediction in optimal control schemes. Opportunities for research searching solutions are given, ranging from model identification to medical protocol digitalization and fusion with machine learning algorithms.

Adaptive Structures and Facades in Civil Engineering – a new field for intelligent mechatronics

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dr. h.c. Oliver Sawodny

Institute for System Dynamics
University of Stuttgart

Abstrakt:

The building sector consumes currently more than 40 % of global resources and energy. Projecting the demand of buildings according to the increasing world population lead to significant resource problems in the near future. Therefore, increasing efficiency and reducing resources in the building sector is a crucial task. Adaptivity of the load bearing structures as well as the façade elements offers a high potential to reduce grey energy due to ultra light-weight load bearing structures respectively new ideas concerning energy reduced building elements and comfort oriented climate control. In the talk a systems engineering view on the specific problems in adaptive buildings is given. At first, the control system in the background for the active adaptive control system for the load bearing structure is discussed. This includes the question of sensor and actuator placement, state estimation concept, fault diagnosis and control concept for actuated buildings. In case of building elements the general problem of dramatically reduced thermal mass due to the use of light weight sandwich façade elements has to be considered for the complete climate control approach. The results will be demonstrated in a 36 m high rise multi-storey building.
