DFG Research Group 2401 begins second phase

IRT continues research on "Optimization-Based Multiscale Control of Low-Temperature Combustion Engines" in the now approved second funding period of the research group FOR2401.

The decision of the DFG to continue funding research on innovative control concepts for low-temperature engine combustion processes enables the interdisciplinary research group FOR2401 to continue its work on the implementation of efficient and low-emission combustion processes.

With innovative low-temperature combustion processes, high efficiencies can be achieved with simultaneously low pollutant emissions. However, the technical realization of the innovative combustion processes requires high-performance, model-based control concepts in order to make these advantages technically usable. These concepts have been researched in the German-Swiss research group since 2016.

Successful collaboration already ongoing since 2016

In the first phase, funded from 2016 to 2019, the consortium, consisting of three institutes at RWTH Aachen University, the Systems Control and Optimization Laboratory at Albert Ludwigs University Freiburg, the Working Group for Physical Chemistry I at Bielefeld University and the Institute for Dynamic Systems and Control at ETH Zurich, conducted joint research on control strategies for low-temperature combustion processes, chemical analysis of the processes and numerically favorable algorithms for implementing the controls on the research group's test benches.

In the second, now approved funding period, the research group will be strengthened by the Institute for Combustion and Gas Dynamics at the University of Duisburg-Essen. At the same time, after many years of successful cooperation, the subproject based in Bielefeld was concluded at the same time as Prof. Kohse-Höinghaus retired. Thus, in the coming funding period, the Institute for Combustion Engines (VKA), the Institute For Combustion Technology (ITV) and the Institute of Automatic Control (IRT) of RWTH Aachen University will conduct research together with the institutes of the University of Duisburg-Essen, the University of Freiburg and ETH Zurich on the further technical implementation of these low-temperature combustion processes.

The interdisciplinary character due to the close cooperation of all subprojects of the research group offers excellent conditions to get closer to the common goal of the technical realization of low-temperature combustion. We are looking forward to the joint work in the next three years!
