Model-Predictive Control of Energy Systems

The control of energy systems makes high demands on the chosen control technique due to the highly nonlinear system behavior and the necessity for consideration of inherent dead times as well as constraints of the actuating and output variables. Conventional control concepts cannot meet the strict requirements regarding the control performance, which are necessary to guarantee strict regulations, for example for emissions.

Information on RWTHmoodle Course Rooms

Registration for the RWTHmoodle course rooms is usually performed by the students themselves, starting from the lecture site in the RWTHonline system. If you have trouble registering or you need a late registration, please contact your respective advisor.

Model-predictive control techniques offer the possibility to account systematically for the demands and to ensure a high control performance for the entire operating range. The students get to know the limits of conventional control concepts as well as the areas of application for model-predictive control.

Topics

During the lectures and exercises the following topics will be treated:

  • Introduction to model-based control of energy systems
  • Overview of model-based control concepts
  • Control-oriented modeling
  • Introduction to optimization
  • Fundamentals of linear model-predictive control
  • Fundamentals of nonlinear model-predictive control
  • Modeling and model-based control of combustion engines
  • Modeling and model-based control of wind energy plants

Lecture and Exercise

The course is given as L2/E2 during the summer term. The lecture takes place on Thursday 12:30 to 2:00pm in the Seminarroom of the IRT, Campus-Boulevard 30, room 054, 1st floor whereas the exercise is on Thursday from 2:30 to 4:00pm.

For information on lectures and exercises check with RWTHonline .

Course materials for the lectures and the exercises can be downloaded from the RWTHmoodle platform.
