Automatic Control is a compulsory course for the Bachelor course in Mechanical Engineering. It teaches how to solve typical tasks in signal processing and control as well as to handle tasks in the description and analysis of dynamic systems methodically. An emphasis of the course is put on the usability of the methods in practical applications.

Information on L2P Course Rooms
Registration for the L2P course rooms is usually performed by the students themselves, starting from the lecture site in the RWTHonline system. If you have trouble registering or you need a late registration, please contact your respective advisor.
The detailed lecture contents are as follows:
- objectives in feedforward and feedback control:
simple control examples, basic concepts, terms, functional diagram
- static behaviour
of control loop elements: plant, measuring devices and actuators; static behaviour
of control loops: characteristic curves, linearization of nonlinear relations, control factor
- dynamic behaviour of control loop elements:
differential equations of dynamic transfer elements, Laplace transformation, transfer, function, frequency response, Nyquist plot, Bode diagram
- stability of dynamic systems, control loops in particular:
controller settings, adjustment rules, performance criteria, algebraic and geometric stability criteria
- linear sampling controls:
description of discrete time transfer systems, quasi-continuous sampling control
- Control systems with non-linear transfer elements:
follow-up controls, switching controllers
- Multi-loop systems:
pre-control, feedforward control, auxiliary manipulated and auxiliary controlled variables, cascade control, reference variable filter
- multivariable control:
coupling and decoupling of control loops
- state space:
introduction to state space control
- discrete event systems:
description and analysis of discrete event systems, system modelling with Petri nets

Consultation Hours and Additional Support
The Institute of Automatic Control offers additional supporting courses. These are offered in winter and summer semester.
- Each working day from 11am to 12 noon at the institute's research assistants. The assignment of the assistants to the weeks within the lecture period can be found in the regulation of consultation hours.
- Shortly before the date of exam: Block consultation hours for exam preparation
Note: In this period there are no regular, daily consultation hours betrween 11am and 12noon!
