Process Control and System Automation

In many sectors of mechanical engineering complex systems with multiple inputs and outputs are to be automized. Programmable logic controllers and process control systems facilitate automatic control as well as process visualization and documentation in a very comfortable way, so that the designer is enabled to focus on the control development. In this course based on control engineering or comparable courses some principles and instrument engineering are explained.

In the “model factory for teaching and research” of the IRT the students have the chance to gain practical experience with modern automation technology within the scope of the laboratory exercise. Due to the proximity of the laboratory the lecture topics can be complemented by concrete examples anytime.

The course is offered during the summer semester and takes place in the seminar room and the model factory of the Institute of Automatic Control.


A registration via RWTH Online is required to participate in the course. The number of participants is limited due to the limited space in the model factory of IRT. RWTH Online distributes the spaces according to priority in the week before the first lecture. If you are still enrolled in a Bachelor program and want to take part in the course ahead of a Master program, you unfortunately can not register in RWTH Online. Though, this is required for the fair distribution of the spaces. Unfortunately, experience has shown that there are regularly no spaces left after distribution. However, you are invited to send an e-mail to the contact person who will put you on our waitlist.


Due to the first lecture already beginning on April 4, the registration period ends on April 1, 2019. The registration period for the course starts on March 11, 2019.
